Pre Production Planning
Y1 Production One - UAL Proposal Form
So the idea for Hit The Road Series Two came around after I finished the first series of it. but at the time I didn't know what sort of format I would like to do it in whether it be like the first series reviewing cars or whether it be having a road trip style. But in the end, I settled on doing a how-to series for new drivers or for people who are just unsure of what to do.
So to get the idea off the ground i needed to complete the project proposal form:
Rationale:
Why do You want to Do This Project(s)?
I would like to do this project because I am interested in how television works and how it is made.
For this project, I am continuing a series I did for my final project in the last academic year I made a series called Hit The Road where I review three cars all Honda’s in red, white, and blue color scheme and I felt like this series shouldn’t end quite yet so I will be continuing it not by reviewing more cars but I will be showing you how to check things and how to maintain your car by doing a Nine episode second series.
Also, I want to do this series to develop more skills like better presenting, directing, and producing it.
It will be in two formats one is a YouTube short/TikTok style and the normal style of the landscape for television and YouTube.
Project concept:
What Is the Project(s)?
The project is called Hit The Road and it will be a 9 episode 2nd series where I will go over how to with your car so for example how to check the oil, how to top up the screenwash, and how to clean your car safely without any serwl marks to the car.
It will be done in two formats to get the most viewers as not all viewers watch Television so it won't reach its full potential of what it could get.
It will be around 10 minutes for an episode (estimated) so over the series that would be 1 hour and 20 minutes.
A green screen may be used to have a set background in some episodes.
And different filming locations will be used in different episodes.
Evaluation:
How Will You Evaluate Yourself?
I will do an evaluation Episode as I did in the first series where it’s a question-and-answer episode in the car where I switch seats in the car of what went well with the series and what didn’t go so well with it and what I could have done differently with the series and if there would be a series three of hit the road and I will answer viewers questions in it like a question and answer to help the viewers with there car questions. Series three could be about moding your car tastefully and not going over the top.

Proposal & Treatment
NCM – Single-camera proposal and Treatment:
Project Type: Television show.
Title: Hit The Road.
Logline: In this series Matthew teaches how to maintain your car from checking your oil to things like washing your car scratch free this series is aimed at first time drivers and for people who are just unsure.
Proposed Run Time: 9 x 15 minutes episodes.
Episode outline: the concept is to produce nine episodes what are around 15 minutes with episode 10 Bing a blooper episode with any mistakes in the over 9 episodes what would be edited out of the other episodes I will use the skills that I learned in level two media when I made the first series of hit the road for my final project these skills were presented producing editing And much more. I will show in detail how to cheek things with your car for example how to cheek the oil level and how to top up the screen wash these are just some of the episodes.
Target Audience: My Target Audience for Hit The Road is from 17 to 30 age range with it mostly being an audience with an interest in cars or people wanting to know more about them.
Rating: The rating of Hit The Road would be PG because it may have mild language in it, but this would be edited out where possible and would go into a bloopers episode and this would be rated at 12 rating.
Genre: Lifestyle, factual, documentary.
Themes: car, car maintenance how to.
Similar films/TV/ Inspirations:
Top Gear, the Grand tour, carwow, car throttle, Auto Alex, GCM and many more.
https://www.youtube.com/c/carwow
https://www.youtube.com/c/CarThrottle
Top Gear because of how they present the cars on screen with the cinematic shots especially the tracking shots and close up shots with the visual effects with the car reflection in water.
The grand tour because how they talk to the camera when driving and they a funny and how they get different camera shots.
Car wow because of the present the cars on the car reviews and on challenges.
Car throttle because there presenting is relaxed and makes you laugh, and it’s made on a budget for each video.
Camera: the exterior shots will be done with an action camera and camera on a tripod and with camera car for tracking shots with the action camera.
Interior shots can also be done with an action camera with suction cup mount.
The cinematographer Will be directed to. Make the shots look very clean. And not blurry. They will also be directed to get. Very good angles. Of the car. And have the presenter in view. When the presenter is doing bits to camera.
Quality/format: The format will Digital on to a SD Card. using the best camera or DSLR available preferably at 4K resolution, however 1080p HD resolution will be the minimum.
Lighting: The lighting I will use is natural daylight due having no onsite power and the car doesn’t have a power inverter on board. and interior lights to light up the car inside if a dull day. I can’t have any other lighting as there will be no power to power the lights. We will also look at the weather forecast To see what days are best for filming and what time is sunrise and sunset for that day. So, we know when to film. We will also look where the sun is. In the sky. To see where to position the car and the cameras So, we don't get any clouds in the way Of the car causing shadows.
Colour grade: The Colour grade for this series will be in colour possibly a slight bit of editing of it will be needed depending on the weather an lighting on the day of the recording.
Practical Visual effects: In this production there will be no practical vision effects Because Of the nature Of the series.
Post visual effects: post visual effects. With some graphics. Like with social media tags And Messages what will pop up. Saying don't forget to subscribe. And. The YouTube like symbol.
Production/ sound design: This production of the series will be done in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire manly but could go in to other counties and other countries such as northern Ireland, Scotland and wales if I go on holiday and get some cinematic footage of the Car driving past the camera
And the sound design will have engine sounds from the car and other sounds such as the car doors, bonnet opening, and other sounds what the sound designers think are appropriate for the episode. I will be talking in some shots, and I will also have background music as well.
The sound designers will be directed to make the title scene intro music to accompany the title scene cinematic shot filmed by the cinematographer they will make the intro music or find it on the Internet copyright free with the copyright information so we can credit it in the credits and on the description of the YouTube video also they will record different car sounds for example opening the bonnet closing the car door the engine and much more.
Casting:
Matthew Taylor: (Director, Producer and Presenter.)
Cameron Steer: (Cinematographer.)
Ben Harris: (Sound Director.)
Ben Maliszewski: (Sound Director.)
Millie Canavan-Rossin: (Lead Editor.)
Nedas Kapilovas: (Graphics/Marketing.)
Presenting style: the presenting style of hit the road will be a professional and relaxed approach to presenting because then it won't be too formal for the type of content that we will be producing.
Editing style: the editing style will make the cuts seamless and if not will use a cut scene for that specific episode and the footage won’t be jumpy or having gaps between scenes. The editor will be directed to edit the series and give the director update on how the edit is going with the series an anything they may need help with on the edit. I would also be able to edit the series as the director to have a director’s cut also the editor would be able to send the raw footage to the director. the editor will also have to edit the intro together with the music that the sound directors have made or found on the Internet.
Running Time: the total running time for Hit the road is 135 minutes or 2 hours and 25 minutes.
Budget: I will need a budget of £100 for all nine episodes to cover petrol costs and any props or equipment needed for the series.
Schedule:
Four weeks to six weeks
(Pre-production)
Week one pre-production finalize filming locations and making sure ready to film with all documents in place
(Production)
Week two film the opening titles and first four episodes. Intro music needs doing, and sounds need recording.
Week three film the remaining five episodes. Get new graphics done for the editing
(Postproduction)
Week four starting to edit the first four episodes and make sure its all filmed and happy with it
(Release)
Week five finishing up editing and uploading to YouTube.
Copyright considerations: Music I put in the background of cinematic shots has to be copyright free or I have to get permission to use it otherwise if uploaded to YouTube it will get a copyright notice on it and it won’t be able to monetise it. And if I copy exactly the top gear format and make it the same its copyright. Sound directors will need to make sure that they have all the correct copyright information on where they got any sounds from and how they made the sounds if they made them.
Distribution: It will be on the College TV show as a segment and it will also be uploaded to MT Productions YouTube Channel and will also be on MT Productions Website.
Justification: the justification for this series is I am interested in cars and wanted to show the viewers on how to look after their car from the perspective oh first time driver learning for themselves how to do it.
Goals: The main goal of this series is to successfully entertain the audience and inform them about how to look after and maintain your car. who knows hit the road may come back for a third series...

Hi Alex,
My name is Matthew Taylor I have just started studying level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production at Newark College in Newark Nottinghamshire. I was wondering if I could ask you, if you would like to appear in one of the videos, I am planning to do for my college project.
For my project I am doing a how-to series with my car. For example, what to look out for when buying a first car and how to check your oil and other topics to help new drivers with their first car.
The series is called Hit The Road. This would be the second series because I did this series last year when I was studying level 2 Creative Media Production. Here is a link to my YouTube channel for you to look at https://www.youtube.com/c/MTProductionsyt
I look forward to hearing from you.
