Episode Three
How to check your Tyre tread/pressure
The Script
(Farndon)
Hi and welcome to Hit The Road in this series I am going to be showing you how to check things with your car like engine oil, screenwash, tyres and the list goes on.
So, to check our tyre tread we first put the car on full lock one way. To check the tyre tread, we need 20p coin or a tread death meter to see if we have the legal tread depth of 1.6mm across the whole tyre or alternatively we can have a tread meter which will tell you exactly what tread you have left.
To check the pressure in your tyres Is very important because that’s what keeps you on the road safely so if there underinflated it can be dangerous and if there overinflated it can also be dangerous, so we need the right pressure in them. Most modern cars have a system in them called tyre deflation warning system what tells you a tyre is flat from the speed of the tyre and also the rotation mass of it by the ABS sensor on this Honda civic if it’s a different car this may be different so check in your owner manual.
On the driver’s door jamb, it should have a sticker what tells you what pressure you will need in your tyres. This will be different from car to car and from front to back. For example, my civic needs 30 psi in the front and 30 psi in the back when its in normal conditions but when you have five passengers it needs 32 and 32 for the extra load in the car.
So, to pump them up we need to remove the dust caps and have a tyre compressor as it would be hard with a hand pump. If you don’t have you can do it at most gas/petrol stations
Pump them up to the correct pressures.
Once we have pumped them up, we put the dust caps back on.
