Titanic is based upon the famous ship called the Titanic in April 1912 where it famously hit an iceberg in the Atlantic ocean on its way to New York USA. It is a romance and disaster movie written by James Cameron who also wrote Avatar. The film has both historical facts in it and it also has fictional aspects in it based from accounts of what actually happened.

Film Review

The ship may sink but the film does not!

Titanic is more than a film about a disaster. It is also a love story centred around Rose and Jack, played by Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The film begins with an old, fragile Rose who is watching Television story about a team retrieving artefacts from the Titanic while doing some pottery and, she sees a drawing, which we later find out is of her, [interestingly this prop was drawn by James Cameron]. This drawing however is not what the team are looking for. The Heart of the Ocean Diamond Necklace is what they look for; This was Rose’, which she describes as an “old heavy thing” that she didn’t like. The framing narrative is set up here, leading to Rose telling her story. Young Rose is a first-class passenger whereas Jack is third class and traveling in steerage.

From the first ten minutes of the film, I can see that there is a vast wealth divide from Rose being in first class on the ship meanwhile Jack is in third class on the ship and back in 1912 they were separated on the ship and had their dedicated areas where they could go.  This would be a theme throughout the film with the wealthy people’s lives prioritised.

As Titanic leaves Southampton port you see the sheer size of Titanic as they have a fishing boat for comparison for the size and we also start to see some of Titanic interiors. In first class we see Rose’s cabin and in third class we see Jack walking down the corridor to his cabin which he must share with three other passengers but on Titanic this was quite nice compared to other ships of the time.

Titanic got the name “unsinkable” because White Star Line implemented several safety features such as watertight bulkhead, automatic watertight doors that close when they detect water raising the ballast up. It would also raise an alarm at the bridge of the ship. Did you know after Titanic sank the White Star Line implemented more safety features on their other Olympic class liners such as electric davits, more lifeboats, making the watertight bulkhead higher within the ship so that it doesn't spill into the other compartments and causing the same fatal flaw what it did on the Titanic.

The first time Rose meets Jack is when she is feeling overwhelmed at dinner, and she runs to the back of the ship and climbs over the safety railing and gets ready to jump off them but Jack spots her and offers to help her and he does. He pulls her back over the railing and saves her from the mighty Atlantic Ocean which would be freezing cold at that time of year considering that there were icebergs.

Them falling in love was magical because they weren’t supposed to meet but because Rose was feeling overwhelmed and ran to the back of the boat, they met and they spent the rest of the voyage together to the very end.

The iceberg hits and the film changes from a romance to action and survival film in a matter of minutes of The Titanic hitting it the berg. As the music changes from being all calm to suspenseful and more dramatic music makes you want to watch more as with out the music the film would be quite boring.

James Cameron dived down to the Titanic many times, some people say he spent more time on the Titanic than the actual passengers did in 1912. “After the ship strikes the iceberg James Cameron says that the passengers pass through all stages of death, fear, denial, anger, depression and acceptance” James Cameron says in the making of titanic book. (Marsh and Kirkland, 1998). He got most of the shots of the Titanic from the bow of the ship and the crews' quarters on the ship. After he filmed Titanic, he helped film the Ghost of the Abyss for Disney. He later went on to film a documentary for National Geographic about the Titanic and on how they created the shot for the film.

CGI was used frequently with computer generated passengers in some scenes, especially when Titanic was setting sail. It was also used when the Titanic was sinking when the passengers were jumping off the ship. Also, they only built the set on side, so they had to reverse the image to get the other side of the ship. This also meant the actors had to wear clothing with backwards lettering for White Star Line, so it was the right way in the final film.

They also had the original blueprints of the titanic from the original ship builders Harland and Wolf in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to get the ship’s look as close to the original as possible.

The film was made in 1997 by James Cameron and it was re-released in 2012 exactly 100 years after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

It was released on Blu-ray and in 3D and it was in cinemas again for a while due to its popularity.

Overall, I would recommend watching Titanic as it was very well made for a film made in 1997 and it hasn’t really aged that much but I think if it was made again today, I think that they would film it in 4k or even 8k with Dolby surround sound to make it even more immersive then it already is.

I would give Titanic four out of five stars.

Summary of The Reviews

In the reviews I have read and watched I have found a few key moments. In the film that all the reviewers mention in their reviews and they use some majestic words like in the Roger Ebert review he used “like a great iron sphinx on the ocean floor” and in the empire review of titanic they said “Titanic is not subtle by any stretch of the imagination but it will leave even the most cynical, heartless swine with a lump in the throat. And for once it won't be their lunch coming up.” This means that it was very suspenseful near the end of the film as viewers didn’t know if Jack or Rose would Live or Die when the ship sank! When the ship did sink, they said “I won’t let go Jack” but later on Rose let go of jack’s hand and she said with her memering voice I won’t let go jack slowly kissing his cold hand and then one of the lifeboats was searching for survivors and rose was trying with all her might to shout comeback, comeback comeback but it was no luck it was that cold that night and with her energy depleting it looked like she was slowly giving up but then she looked around her and she saw a man with a whistle and she got to it and blew it and blew it and finally the lifeboat rescued her from dying in the icy cold Atlantic ocean.

Contextual Elements

RMS Titanic was laid down on the 31st March 1909 at Harland and wolf ship yard at Belfast Northern Ireland United Kingdom it was launched on 31st May 1911 and it was completed on 2nd April 1912 it was part of the Olympic class liners which included the RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic and HMHS Britannic. RMS Olympic was the only one of this class which went one to serve a life at sea she was known as old reliable and she was sold off as scrap on 13th October 1935. Luckily the interiors were saved, and they were bought by a hotel called the white swan in Alnwick, Northumberland UK which still exist today.

Did you know there is only one surviving white star line vessel and its located at the Titanic Museum at Belfast Northern Ireland it’s called SS Nomadic and it was a tender for the Olympic and Titanic it helped get passengers on at Cherbourg France as Titanic couldn’t fit at the port as it was the largest ship at the time in 1912.

The captain of the Titanic was Captain Edward John smith he was due to retire after this maiden voyage of the titanic but when it sank, he went down with the ship.

The name Titanic comes from the titans in Greek mythology.

The first class accommodation was designed to be the best in the shipping industry it was the best in its class it had a gym, swimming pool, libraries and it also had a Turkish bath titanic was also one of the first ships what a wireless transmitter to communicate with other ships and on land to send messages for passengers this became crucial on the night of the sinking as it was able to communicate with other ships and that’s how the RMS Carpathia rescued the survives from the Titanic

At the time Titanic was also one of the safest ships as it had Automatic water tight doors what would come down if the ballast was lifted by water, they would come down to seal the compartment that’s why titanic got the name Unsinkable. Sadly, it didn’t have enough lifeboats to save everyone on board as at the time when titanic was built they didn’t have to have loads of lifeboats and designers also said that it cluttered the decks and were unsightly. But this all changed after the Titanic sank on all ships because they need to make sure that it didn’t happen again so Olympic had some changes and so did Britannic.

Britannic was under construction of the time of the Titanic disaster so it could have lots more changes then Olympic what was first built before Titanic. For example, Britannic was built with more lifeboats then the Titanic and it had electric davits so they could be launched more electively and quicker than before. Also, it had a double hull at the engine and boiler rooms so it would be stronger in this area and the watertight bulkheads where taller than before.

Titanic was found in 1985 by Robert Ballard.

Here is some artefacts they have found from diving to the Titanic.

Here is some coal what helped fire the Titanic on it madden voyage.

The pocket watch stop moments after the Titanic sank so we have a good indication of what time it sank on that fateful night in 1912.

There has been numerus dives to the Titanic to retrieve artefacts and inspect the condition of the titanic and to take photos of it for future generations to see the history of the Titanic, so it doesn’t fade away in to the abyss.

They also keep diving down to titanic to check its condition and take new high res images of the RMS Titanic.

Did you know that the HMHS Brititanic Is in very shallow water in Greece and it’s a good condition compared to the titanic.

Technical Elements

The Titanic Film was released in 1997 in America with a budget of $200 million USD dollars That in today’s money it would cost around $369 million and that’s a lot of money! Titanic is an epic romance and disaster film directed, written and produced and edited by James Cameron.

It has both historical and fictional aspects in the film based on accounts of the real sinking of survivors. Stars in the film like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet fall into different social classes within the ship for example Rose was in first class on the ship whereas Jack was in third class on the ship when he won his ticket in a game of poker moments before the Titanic set sail for New York.

However, the making of the movie didn’t come without a few mistakes in the making and editing of it. Later on in 2012 when it was released on blu ray they corrected a few of the mistakes that were left in the first release of the film back in 1997 for example they colour corrected some of the scenes and fixed some issues with the camera reflections in the glass and leaving in some light reflections in the glass these were all edited out in 2012.

Also when you look at the mistakes you also notice on the bow of the ship in two different scenes that it is very different and also on the stern of the ship the lettering of the Titanic is a very different font and text size. Still, these are minor mistakes in such a long film in my opinion.

Did you know that some of the scenes at the start of the film were filmed back to front as the set of the titanic for exterior shots was only built on one side so in the start of the film you see rose to get out of the car and her beauty spot is left side of her face but later on in the film, you see that is moved to the right side of her face this is due to the camera flipping and the other behind the scenes you see that the white star line workers are wearing the jumpers with white star line back to front so when the flip the image it is correct in the final film.

James Cameron’s interest in making the titanic film came from an interest in shipwrecks and he thought that titanic was the mount Everest of shipwrecks

In the film, they also used many special effects, for example, the used green screen for a number of scenes including when Rose was in the first-class lounge on the Titanic also When jack looks over the bow of the ship which was all done by the green screen.

CGI was also used in the film for example it was used for the aftermath of the titanic hitting the iceberg and it was also used for the computer simulation of how the titanic sank.

CGI or Computer-Generated Imaging was first in a film in 1973 it has come a long way since then as computers have developed and become a lot smaller and a lot quicker with modern and advanced technology.

The set of the titanic was made in Mexico north America it was 775 feet long and 10 stories high. Another mistake they made in the original release of the film is when the titanic is sinking you see the end of the set lights. So, on the rerelease, they also edited this out of the film, so it looks more realistic.

Film Theory

Titanic’s film theory has a few key points here they are one of them is that jack is a time traveller “Jack died, and his ghost led rose to the door.” This happens after the ship sinks. Also there is another Theory that jack wins his ticket aboard the ship in a poker game since he was too poor to afford a ticket onboard.

Wall-E

Wall.e has a spaceship called the axiom.
Wall.e is cleaning up the world as it is full of human rubbish.
Wall.e gets burned from the spaceship engine which delivers Eve.
Wall.e is impressed with Eves Flying.
Wall.e begins to talk to eve and brings her to his home.
Wall.e and Eve have a starting relationship.
Wall.e gives Eve a plant and she goes into hibernation as that’s what she is looking for.
Wall.e doesn’t want Eve to leave earth, so he hangs on to the spaceship and goes wither.
Wall.e gets in Eves's bad books as he destroys the hospital bit of the spaceship
Eve tries to send Wall.e back to earth.
Eve then tries to get Wall.e back as another robot tried to send the plant back to earth.
They both dance around in space. Wall.e with a fire extinguisher.
They get back on the ship and they find the plant again, so they go to the bridge to give it to the captain, but the robots don’t want to go to earth where the captain does.
The autopilot system gets turned off after the captain fights with it
They get the plant and put it in the container, so the ship goes to earth.
The ship goes in hyperdrive to earth.
When Wall.e charges it sounds like the Mac Os start-up chime.
Wall.e has to have a lot changed and doesn’t remember Eve.
Then suddenly he remembers her!
The end!

Saving the Titanic (Dramatized documentary)

It’s a story about all the engineers who helped keep the lights on and trying to save titanic to the last minute.
They interview the chief fireman to get answers about the sinking of the titanic to see if they were all following orders
Coal powered titanic.
There was a coal strike when titanic set sail.
Southampton lost a lot of people on the titanic as a lot of people were working on it.
Titanic was made in Belfast a conflict was happing at the time in northern Ireland against protestant and Catholics against the uniest.
They called titanic a grandest lifeboat as it was unsinkable.
Titanic’s steam funnel three of them worked and the fourth one was fake to make it look grander.
There was a fire in a coal bunker. In the age of steam ship this was common espsialy with cheap coal. This would affect titanic in the sinking.
Three days before the sinking titanic had its first ice warning so it changed it course it was sailing to avoid it.
The order to shut the dampers came moments before titanic hit the iceberg.
Titanic had beginning to take on water in 5 watertight compartments.
The electricians were keeping all the ships systems one.
The first lifeboat was lowered at 12.45am.
Chief engineer bell was trying to keep titanic a float for as long as possible.
He ask the fireman instead of ordering them to do it. It was their choice.
Chief engineer bell even starts loading the boilers up with coal, so they have enough steam to run vital equipment.
Titanic was a breaking point with so much water onboard things were starting to break like the watertight bulkhead. And fusing electrics.
Titanic is broken into two all the engineers who stayed to the very end to save titanic and saving other peoples live for keeping the power on.
They saved it for an hour and a half more than expected.
No one survived in the engineering crew on the titanic.
The end.

Titanic The Shocking Truth (Documentary)

It’s a conspiracy that it wasn’t the titanic that sank but the Olympic and the names were switched.
Ships in 1912 were mainly immigrant ships also known as coffin ships as they were in poor condition and conditions were poor.
Olympic had a collision with HMS hawk Olympic was at fault and insurance didn’t pay out.
Olympic had a temporary repair in Southampton. They more repairs in Belfast.
Olympic would never pass another safety test.
The switch could have happened over a weekend.
Captain smith had quite a few accidents over his career. He captained them like speed boats.
In 1912 there was a coal strike.
White star line was having trouble finding firemen and greasers.
More than 50 passengers cancelled their first-class tickets including J P Morgan claiming he was ill, but he was well.
There was a fire in coal bunker number 10 it had been smouldering for over a week.
Titanic had 6 messages on the night of the sinking.
The titanic radio operators were very busy with passenger messages instead of other ship messages.
Titanic should have been able to avoid the ice burg.
It was 35 minutes until a distress message was sent.
45 minutes until they started the pumps to pump out water.
They got the position wrong.
They expected the ship on the horizon to come sailing over but it didn’t.
Ismay was shamed for the rest of his life due to getting in a lifeboat last minute.
The board of trade was outdated with the number of lifeboats.
No one on the titanic was at fault.
The owners were not at fault.
Captain lord was at fault for not going to help the titanic.
The Titanic was the only ship to sink from an iceberg.
The end!
